County Construction Division Distributes Residential Elevator Safety Alert

HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 30, 2019) - The Washington County Division of Construction would like to inform citizens and builders of the recent information released from the Maryland Department of Labor regarding residential elevator safety.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission(CPSC) recently advised that residential elevators may have excessive space between the elevator car door/gate and the hoistway or swing door. The hazard is that the space between the elevator closed door and hoistway door is large enough to allow a child to fit between the closed doors and jurisdictions may not be following ASME A17.1-2016, Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators which limits this space. Read full article regarding advisory here: CPSC alert.
